I was thinking of removing the hearth rug and putting tile, will that help? Can I only just WASH the mold off? It's not much, but it's gotten on objects things that were stored surrounded by there, and I see for a moment on the WALL now. Will better exposure to air help?

You can wash it near a bleach solution to temporarily remove it. But you need a intact house/apartment de-humidifier in the nouns to remove the moisture. Until you remove the moisture, you will continue to enjoy increased problems with mold and mildew smells.
