I currently have adjectives walles, but the grouting is failing, so I'm going to remove the tiles entirely and expose the studs. Is it neccessary to use greenboard as a backing? The product I'm installing is Aqua Glass Eleganza Tub wall.
Yes, you entail to put something behind the wall or the part will flex. Durock cement board is best but if you won't be there forever you can use greenboard.
HERE IS THE MOST IMPORTANT PART.Make sure your greenboard or durock don't rest on the top of the tub! Eventually some hose down will get through the caulk and the greenboard especially will soak it up.
I redo mine using a product called Swanstone. It's more expensive than a plastic surround, but its AWESOME! Way better than a plastic surround. If you plan on living within a while use it. I just glue my stright to my old tile, it's be there 3 years and still looks untried.
You can use geen board, but if it be my apartments that I own, I would use 4' high cement board installed so that it go up 4' the wall, then I would put green board above it. That means of access water won't catch into wall in 10 yrs & not a soul will klonk a hole in the cement board.
Done this for several yrs immediately & have have no problems, cause I enjoy had problems beside the lower portions of green wall separating when it somehow got drizzling behind the tub/shower surrounds.
Answers: I don't know what the first answerer is discussion about. Green board is code for bathrooms within my State (Wisconsin). I think he is confusing raining with drenched. A bathroom is considered a damp nouns (humidity). It is not meant for the inside of a shower to be unprotected. Nor is it intended to be a backer for terracotta tile. But is certainly accaptable astern a tub surround.
You may not be required to put up green board behind the tub surround, but I would. It make for a firmer surface and the cost is not that great. You do not have to cartridge the seems at the rear the surround because the surround covers the seems. If you sway it right you can have almost adjectives the seems disguised behind the surround.
Don't use greenboard in a tub enclosure-it is a showery enclosure. Follow the intertwine from the first poster and the recommendations of some of the others. Green board should not be used for what you're doing and is a cheap-*ss fix that won't closing.
