How to trial for hot cable.? my old oil lamp fixture had 2 white wires (from ceiling) twisted...
my old oil lamp fixture had 2 white wires (from ceiling) twisted together and connected to a screw, it also have a green wire (from ceiling)connected to it beside a screw.
no black wires were connected to neutral fixture although they are 3 wires in the ceiling tape off together.
how do i trial for hot wire, i get a tester that lights up.
i got a latest light fixture that have 3 wires, 1 wht 1blk and copper.
i know the copper goes next to green, white with white and black next to black. so i untangled the black wires, and i connected one to new insubstantial.
but now my topical light doesnt turn bad.
so i know i by passed my switch.
how do i test for hot line....where does the hot telecommunication go?
is it possible one of the white wires is my hot flex and the other white whire my neutral....
so relieve please, im confused and frustrated
Answers: It sounds like the frail fixture may have be improperly wired. It should not own had the green telecommunication going to one side (screw) with the white wires going to the other side of the fixture. The green lead is normally a ground, and is with the sole purpose connected to the housing of the fixture - it's purpose is solely for safety, within case the hot side comes contained by contact with the metal fixture housing (it blows the breaker by design to some extent than being an electrocution hazard).
Typically, the hot (black) flex is switched, and the neutrals bypass the switch.
Your best bet is to search online for a electric wiring diagram for a switched light fixture, print it out and working next to your test flimsy, find the switched hot wire by measure from each flex to the ground wire (for convenience single - hopefully it is really grounded) with the switch set surrounded by both directions. Note the results on the diagram, and that should help you sort it out.
next to lights you can have several things going on and the colors may not be indicitive to what wire it is. Especially if here is more than one switch or light. So you really own to know what is going on. It sounds to me like you enjoy more than one switch. This means those white wires that be bundled together have to stay together. you should enjoy someone else flick the switches. Look up "switch leg" on google, and you will see various ways this is done.
