My home thermostat is one of those old round dial jobs from the 1970s. I want to replace it next to a new digital one. I have positively no clue about this sort of thing. Can anyone impart me instructions? Thank you!
Here are instructions to replace a thermostat...
the instructions on the new one will probably make referance to a red and a white line. this is the normal color code for a heat just 24v system. so assuming you have a 24v system (you probably do) then the 2 wires currently connected to your round thermostat should connect to the r and w spots on the topical one. just read the instructions, they are usually really good, but commonly include a bunch of different variations that won't apply to you. The new digital one will come beside instructions. More than likely, your old thermostat have two wires connected to it, it is a fairly easy mission to replace it.
Answers: Well it should be pretty straight forward (notice I said should be)
I would recommend a programmable replacement. (pretty useful)
Not knowing what you have other than an outmoded rotary and not knowing what your going to get I would hate to win into it and give you bad warning.
Get yourself to a Home Depot or Lowe's and find someone that works in the heating and cooling department to give support to with your decision on what will work. Ask them what the do's and dont's are. That process you will have a basic conception then when your ready to install it at hand will be a hot line # you can call and they will know how to walk you step by step in correctly electrics it up.
Tools needed:
2 smaller screwdrivers one regular(flat blade) and one Phillips (star) depending on the included screws
Make sure before you start you turn the system sour at the breaker and when your finished turn it back on and check to make sure it operate.
You can do it,
Good luck
