A chimney usually consists of it's exterior (brick or other materials) plus the flue liner which is the actual chimney. Are you conversation about an outdoor fireplace? If so they are usually vitrified clay and cannot be repaired. I own seen a couple that the top sector cracked real unpromising and the owner used a stainless steel band to hold it together. I would not risk it falling apart next to a fire in it though.
