Answers:    We had a sand filter, and I dont have an idea that we ever added sand. Call the manufactuer of the filter, or call/visit the area pool place.

You don't "donate sand" to the filter. You should change it once a year. Remember, it is filter out all the stuff you don't want within your pool so if it gets clogged, it will basis more problems. Back-flushing helps verbs the junk from the filter also. I wait 3 years on changing my sand, but I have no trees around dumping leaves and such.
