I am looking for a new home but I want updated wiring for my computers and electronics and the homes surrounded by my budget have electrics from 50's and 60's. I would like to hold an idea of what is required beforehand I bid on an old home. I also want to know if the wiring guy can put contained by cat5 wiring contained by 5 rooms since he/ she would be in the walls. Would this require alot of of drywalling also? Does the wall inevitability to be ripped to the studs or can a small manageable hole be put contained by the room? The 2 homes I am looking at are@ 1500 sq ft one is 3beds 2 baths, living room family kitchen full crypt 2 baths ...1950-1969 era, the other is a 2 floor and basement from @1910 era. I wor from home so I hold to make sure I own good electrical system and great internet, but I haven't a clue of what that would run me in dollars and I don't want to spend big bucks on a money pit
Thanks!
Answers: I am from PA and cannot update you the cost in Chicago, but I will grant this advice:
Ask for quotes from licensed electricians. Usually, they dispense free estimates. Two or three estimates will give you a well-mannered range of what you will stipulation to spend.
You mentioned CAT 5 wiring, so that involves computer circuits. Make sure your electrician verify that the ground system is excellent, bonded to the water piping and ground rods. If computers are involved surrounded by your work, you might want to consider a lightning protection system. These can be installed for less than $2K.
As far as wall sabotage, the electrician can tell you how much wallboard wants to be removed / cut.
Just about any house you buy will stipulation wiring upgrades for today's computer systems. Talk to a few licensed electricians. They are your best bet.
