1100 sf home will probably wind up up being a one and a half or a two ton system. Depending somewhat on where on earth you live, you should be able to get a system changeout for around $2000 to $3000. Get some more prices from other contractors, and even individual techs who're prepared to moonlight the job.

It depends on what you mean by air conditioner, you enjoy and outside unit (compressor and condenser) an evaporator, furnace and duct work. If they are going to replace the outside unit, evaporator and duct work next the $5400 is a pretty good price. If all you be going to replace is the outside unit then $2500 would be more approaching it.

That's way too high for a Bryant. I bet they are quoting a builders model too.
Just replacing the outdoor component and hooking it up to the old coil is what we call a HACK chore. The outdoor unit and coil must be matched to achieve proper use and capacity. The blower and duct system must also match the coil and condenser size.
$5400.00 for a good quality 13 or 14 SEER would be judicious, especially if the air handler needs changed too.

Answers:    Thats really high if it is for just the AC part and no ductwork. I paid $6000 for a new illustrious efficiency AC and furnace plus running two new cold nouns return ducts and a programmable thermostat.

Do some comparison shopping. We paid lower than 5.000 for a new heat and nouns unit. It's a big unit. Our house is 2600 sq. ft.
