We currently have birds nesting surrounded by our loft. Can anyone please advise of (humane) ways of getting rid of them? Is it plausible to be an expensive process?

I also had this problem for several years running. The local council told me that birds are a protected species during the nesting season and so I couldn't do anything to seize rid of them until nesting was finished.
The problem be that they didn't leave after the nesting season and took up residence adjectives year round - I guess it's warmer contained by my loft space than in trees!
In the back I found a local company which very placidly 'smoked' them out after they had finished nesting, using a non-toxic substance which disturbed them adequate to get them to go, and then we straight away blocked up the hole they were using to win in.
They kept trying to carry back within for quite a while, though, so you requirement to make sure that your loft space is really out of harm`s way.
The company I used was a broad property maintenance firm and they merely charged their usual hourly rate plus the cost of the smoke stuff (can't remember how much but not expensive). Apparently they do a lot of this round here - and also for squirrels!

Go in loft beside good lights, move around surrounded by all areas. Intimidate the birds and they will set off the same means of access as they came surrounded by. Have material arranged to plug/board hole until you can make proper repair.
