My elderly neighbor recently lost his garage door opener remote. It is a genie one. I replaced it but because it is so prehistoric I can't read the frequency number on the transmitter any more (it is from 1978 and he refuses to buy a new system). Does anyone know how to reprogram a genie door vent system from 1978?
Answers: The remote you now have for your neighbor probably won't work beside that vintage opener directly. The new ones own a rolling code to make them harder to break into and the old ones are not compatible near that. I have seen receiver you mount in the garage and connect to the old opening that the new, more secure remotes will work beside.
Here's a site claiming to sell remotes for old openers:

They no longer vend the remotes.
Your best option is to go to a garage door company, overhead door would be best as they production genie so will have all parts within stock, and buy a Code-Dodger receiver. You hook it up to the old opening and can program the new remotes to it. It is moderately priced and will fix the problem.
