I bought a 20 year old house almost 3 years ago. I haven't really used the fireplace, because I don't know if the chimney is clean. You cannot look down it from the roof because there's a trilby on it, and you cannot see past the flu from inside. Any concept?
Answers: It needs to be cleaned once respectively year if you are using it and before you use it if it have set unused more than a year. Creosote buildup in the chimney can fence in fire and literally burn down your house. Birds, insects and rodents will build nests in the chimney if they can find in to do it. To be out of danger, have it cleaned earlier you try to light a fire surrounded by it. It cost me less than $100 to get hold of both of my chimneys swept the last time I have it done.

If you lite you fire place and smoke fills the room, your chimney wants to be cleaned. That's the only point I know. Sorry.
