Answers: Contact your local chamber of commerce for names; also the local Home Remodeler's or Builder's Association/Council contained by your county or state.
Get references and ring or visit them. Get a detailed estimate surrounded by writing.
Be sure the contractor is insured and ask for the name of their insurance agent. Before they initiate any work on your home, call the agent and ask for a copy of their Certificate of Insurance. It should be free upon your request. Most reliable contractors fetch at least a one million dollar liability insurance policy. And most reputable remodeler's wont know how to start right away. If they are good, they probably are booked several months within advance.
Price the materials for yourself at a local Home Center. Add to that the cost of your time to retrieve adjectives of the necessary items and an average hourly rate of $60.00 per hour per creature plus travel time from their base of operation to your home. You may find that what seems close to an expensive cost for the work, may in reality be reasonable when you hold the time to consider the labor and time involved.
I would suggest that you check with some of the local building supply stores, NOT Lowes and Home Depot, but locally owned places, that might hold a list of some guys who are smaller and don't plug. I have gotten lots of work done at my house similar to this and lots of quotes too.
