How can I grasp wood gum out of the mat?
My husband got two big globs of wood cement on the carpet. It's in the order of and inch thick and rock tough. Is there some passageway to get this out minus having to replace the mat??

Try placing a sodden towel over it for a while. Otherwise you can try Goo-Gone or OOPS! If it isn't all the approach through to the matting you can try purely "shaving" with scissors or a blade blade.
