In addition to the other fine answers, the pipes must be dry.
If you can't grasp the water to stop dripping freshly stuff some bread into the joints you are repairing.The bread will hold the water long plenty for you to complete your sweat yet will hold no adverse effects on your plumbing system.

verbs the pipe end beside emery cloth,then I use a clear soft flux.apply the flux to the end of the pipe and inside the fitting later join them together, roast pipe and fitting all around
when the solder melt pull the torch away,the solder will suck into the amalgamated.
you are using map gas right? propane doesn't get hot adequate!

Answers:    You stipulation to clean the cohesive first use some clean steel wool or fine sand quality newspaper on both parts then DO NOT TOUCH THEM
if you do the grease from your fingers will get on the pipe and the solder will not stick. after cleaning use a biddable flux on both parts then apply bake evenly around the pipe don't get it too hot lately hot enough to defrost the solder when you touch it to the pipe it should flow the whole road around the rule of thumb is to use as much solder (in length) as the diameter of the pipe
Just remember very verbs and use a good flux later you should not have any problems
