my washer isn't wringing out the clothes like it should. plus nearby is a funny smell, almost like burning surrounded by the tub. what could it be?
Answers:    These machine 'wring' the sea out by spinning the drum at high speed and pushing the wet out with centrifugal force. This is done by the motor making the power and transmitting the force to the drum via a rubber belt that go around the bottom of the drum. This belt can wear out over time or from being overburdened next to extra heavy loads. As the belt become worn, the grip on the pulleys loosens, and the belt begins to slip. This slippage cause friction and heat and in reality burns the surface of the belt - leading to the smell you hold described. Replacing the belt is not difficult for the mechanically inclined. An appliance repair man will also present this service.

Best of luck,

Dad
Sounds like the motor is wearing out or have something partially jamming it.
