Heater inoperative when we have need of it most!? Our furnace is an 18 year old Marvair, and works fine as...

Our furnace is an 18 year old Marvair, and works fine as long as the temp. is above in the region of 35 degrees. When it get close to or below freezing, we can hear something click off, but it keep blowing cool air, and the "comp. fault" wispy on the thermostat comes on. Is this just an mature furnace that needs to be replaced or is it something we could own fixed and get a few more years out of the furnace? Thanks!
Answers:    It sounds approaching you have a warmness pump. It probably has a control on it call a outdoor thermostat. Some of these controls keep the outdoor chunk of the system off when the warmth gets below the setpoint. It sounds close to the system is working properly. When the control stops the outdoor unit from coming on, the electric backup surrounded by the airhandler should come on to keep the home thaw out. It sounds like you enjoy an old power-driven thermostat, the system would work better if you replaced it with a digital one. For more info, check out the roast pump page at www.hvac-for-beginners.com
