I'm a university student in the South Coast of England and powerfully my new flat mate doesn't turn on the radiators 'to hide away money'. We live in a two bedroom flat near a third room as a lounge and kitchen, so our bills are literally half and partly.
The boiler, located in the closet of my room is singular heating our marine not the radiators, but then again I thought radiators run on gas. All of our radiators are off, and enjoy never been used since I moved contained by. I bought a halogen heater and okay I was wondering if it be more expensive than the gas or water heated radiators in recent times to save me some extra brass on my bills.
What's your view?
Answers: wall radiators would be more economical and will be a better significance. Halogens are more or less a "space heater", not intended as a primary heat source
Electricity (joule per joule) is more vivacity efficient for heat and typically costs less. However, those hallogen heaters are BIG fire hazard!! I would not recommend using one unless this was heat up a garage or someplace where the floors be concrete and combustable objects could be kept clear.
Radiators' water is heated by a boiler, which is powered by any natural gas (90% of them) or by electricity (rare, but some are out there). If this guy does not want to misuse heat/money, then here's what you should do. Close sour all the radiators that he does not want running and sign out on yours. Adjust the thermostat where you want it (if the thermostat is contained by a non-heated room, the boiler to the radiator will always be on since the thermostat will other say "cold" person in a non-heated room. Which next, you're screwed.) and enjoy the steam.
Radiators "run" from hot water, which is heated by burning gas (or electically heated elements that grill the water). Whether it's more expensive is debatable because it seem like you (and your roommie) don't even know how much it costs to roast just a portion of the flat. I'd articulate to run an experiment to let you warmth your room as you want and then check the bill. Obviously it will be more because there's a difference between partial usage and no usage. But afterwards again, you guys are still using hot water, right? So you know how much the hot hose consumption is costing you.
I'd say compromise and utter that you'll pay a sure amount to cover the added cost to heat *your* portion of the flat, and you both will split the remainder. Make sure you mark out yourself because he might try to get some free steam. So at least you seize your portion and the rest he'll have to compensate into too. Don't be a swindler either and merely take what you stipulation.
