We did that at our last house when we notice the water meter wasn't moving, after the town sent us a HUGE back bill, estimating what they thought we be using while THEIR meter was malfunctioning! Talk going on for sticking it to someone trying to be honest! No matter how cruel I thought this was and who I talk to they wanted their money and they required it all at once! Unless it is REALLY bothering you, I wouldn't pursue it.

Your gas meter requirements to be replaced about every 10 years or so. Do you hold extremely high or extremely low bills. This would indicate that nearby is a problem with the meter.
