Gas fireplace wont wishy-washy? Im home for Christmas on leave and Im trying to start mom...

Im home for Christmas on leave and Im trying to start mom and dads fireplace. The pilot muted was out and I be able to re-ignite it but when I turn the fireplace control from sour to on it extinguishes the pilot light. I dont know too much roughly the gas fireplace and was hoping someone could shed some wishy-washy on my situation. Thanks for any help.
Answers:    You hold to hold the pilot light ignition tap on for like 2 minutes past the flame will stay lit, also make sure that the gas string is on all the course, You could be lighting small amounts of gas left surrounded by the line, lacking enough to pale the fireplace.
If the pilot stays on by itself there must be something wrong near the control valve. Chances are the thermocouple is desperate and the pilot won't stay on without you holding the stopcock in. simple /cheap repair.
