I let my neighbors run hose down to their home through the Summer from our frost free spigot.( long story) It is getting cold, so I told them it had to be disconnected. They are saw that if they leave a trickle of river running, it wont freeze. This is a 60 foot garden hose on open ground. I am skeptical. Should I disconnect the hose as powerfully as turn off the hose to it? Do I need to turn sour the water to the spigot? Or are they making sense.
Answers:    Depending on the outside temperature, a trickle could still allow the hose to freeze. What if someone "forgets" to allow the trickle? If that happens, the hose freezes and your frostfree faucet breaks and cause a real problem.
If you vacate trickle run thru it may not freeze but I wouldn't bet much on that.
