My wife and I just bought a 40 year feeble house with a fireplace. The fireplace be just swept professionally previously we moved in. I lit a fire the other time. For the first hour, it was great. Afterward when I added another log, smoke started billowing out and into my living room. The flue be open as be the damper. I also heated the inside of the chimney before I lit the fire. Does anyone hold any suggestions as to why the smoke is coming into the house?
Answers:    40 yr old house funds your flue is high satisfactory or this would have happen for 40 years.
having a chimney sweep mechanism they possible left flue boater off which will allow down draft through your chimney so merely check that from the roof.
not enough nouns is a possibility especially if remodeling has be done. windows may hold been replaced beside ones that seal better nouns gaps around doors may enjoy been repaired et-cetra which would motive your house to be air-tight. others have noted this condition will restrict air(smoke) flow up the flue.

crack a porthole or even BETTER OPTION is if the fireplace has an ash-door outside at stand of fireplace you can crack it open this allows nouns to flow directly in to the firebox form outside right up the rear of the fire. that way you do not hold already heated air self pulled out of your house and it insures fresh air for the fire. the convection readily pulls air and smoke through the damper and up the flue and you don't touch cold air coming surrounded by your window.
use wood that's dry --not showery or green.
