Expert Pool owners: How to Close the pool the RIGHT WAY? I have an above ground 30' round. Almost every year I lose...

I have an above ground 30' round. Almost every year I lose the liner. The skimmer housing cracks, dampen drops and rips out the liner @ the skimmer. It doesnt matter whether I use the skimmer plate or not (actually the skimmer plate cracks every year and plastic shards slice the liner and form it fail too!!) or how frequent ice pillows I hold in the pool to stablize the rime movement. This year I am going to drain the pool below the skimmer and return line in the region of 2" below the discharge port. Can anyone think why this would NOT be a perfect idea? Everything else fail so I think I an at most minuscule taking the same risk of closing the pool full of marine.
Answers:    After 19 seasons this is what we do for an 16x32 on ground rectangle.

Drain the pool in the region of 6-8 inches below the discharge.
Remove the pump and place inside, cover the filter with a rainproof cover.
Add chemicals (we use liquid chlorine) to the remaining 1/2 of marine in your pool.
Agitate the marine with a skimmer web or large pool brush is preferable.
Place the cover on it, and next add wet bladders around the deck to keep the cover surrounded by place (i know you may or may not have that likelihood with an above ground circle)
We do NOT place any sea on the cover at the beginning as the changeable fall, and creamy snow will ensure it stays in place.

That's it. Never have a problem after almost 20 yrs.
I have an above ground oval pool. Each year after we are sure the heat will not go above 70 degree. We buy a chemical kit call "winterizing kit" We put the chemicals in the pool as directed and consent to the pump and filter run for a full 24 hours. These chemicals protect your pump housing and coats the sand in your filter for winter temps. This also protects your liner from the cold winter temps. We consequently drain the water down as low as it will progress after the hoses are removed. We take the pump and filter into a storage shed as okay as the hoses. Place the winter pillows in the middle of the pool and after cover. Luckily we have have our pool 4 years and haven't had to replace any parts however. Good Luck
