I have an 1800 square foot sheep farm home but only one nouns return. My central a/c section is not keeping the house cool. By late afternoon it's 80 degree. I keep the drapes closed, installed attic fan to vent hot air, shaded the a/c element. I've closed off the guest room. The nouns filter is new. The a/c section was serviced behind last summer.
With a short time ago one air return surrounded by the hallway, my solely thought at this point is that we don't have satisfactory air returns. Does anyone know how copious returns you should have per square foot, or doesn`t matter what the formula might be? Or do you have any other planning as to why my home is not staying cool?
Answers: check the ductwork...I had same problem, ac run all morning, on a hunch I checked and found large gap in transition from supply vent (floor vents) to main file...taped them near ac tape...unforced to check, just remove supply vent, small paw mirror and flashlight to look around, also check main trunk procession connections...also - be sure filters stay cleaned.
We own 2200 square foot, 2 units, one split section upstairs and package a part downstairs. They are heat pumps. We solitary have one return per HVAC element. They are large returns near filters. All of our doors own good flow below them even when the doors are shut. This is important. If you own a heat pump, your section could be low on Freon. It's common for them to leach out enough for them to still work but not work densely. IE... they can't keep the house cool. My upstairs element runs allot and sometimes it can't get stalled. And in the extreme fry it doesn't catch up till the sun go down but it's typical in that the grill all rises up near and it's busy keeping the humidity down. I have 2 culmination mounted power roof fans on the south side of my house and a power gable vent on the north side. They are more or less cheap to run. Motors are no bigger than a box fan motor. I own them switched so I can manually turn them on/off but I usually keep them on auto run via thermostat controlled. These are worth have just to keep hold of your HVAC from running non-stop. Makes the roof last longer too!
