In the autobody business we use what is called a "guide coat"
You spray/dust a black or brown colored spatter of spraypaint over the surface then sand the surface. Any imperfection like philosophical scratches etc will show up the color of the spraypaint.
Any tricks for drywal/mud back I prime or am I being rediculous?
Answers:    Just use a bright flimsy and carefully inspect the nouns before priming, repeat after the areas hold been primed, imperfection will jump out consequently, repair those minor flaws with MH or similar product, spot prime those areas, next paint
You may be worried over nothing. Any sand should remove imperfections surrounded by the dried mud. Large gouges unsurprisingly need going over. Once properly primed and painted you should be looking pretty pious.
