If as you say it adjectives works when open, then here has to be some retriction on the frame, not allowing full movement of the mechanism...try again but scarcely...

You may have to file the hole the deadbolt slides into. It may move slightly up or down a fraction of an inch when the other components are within place. You also may want to try to loosen the bottom screws just for a while on the bottom of the door hinge and tighten just a little on the top or vise versa. The door may simply be off a bit. although every thing seem lined up,,,but what the problem is,,,the hook is not lined up near the striker plate on the door jam,,,,, striker plate may need adjust in or out on the jam,,,or up and down,, apply some lip stick to the hook or plunger,,,close the door,,,turn the switch or knob real firmly,,,this will put a mark on where on earth the hook or plunger is hitting,,,then you can adjust as needed
Answers:    The door has dropped slightly, happen all the time. Try this, close the door ,lift it by the bar and then lift the fiddle with to engage the mechanism. To elevate the door look on top of your hinges and you will see a plastic cover, appropriate that off and using an alen key or hex push button turn the stud clockwise to lift the door. If it's not on the top of the hinge it will be on the underside of the hinge, all depends what system it is.
apposite luck
