I have a Henkels hand-held, counter-top sharpener that I hold with my disappeared hand while pulling my knife through it beside my right. It used to be a snug fit for a knife, and I'd feel some resistance. Lately I've notice lately that it slides quite easily, and there's no tautness. Is this normal? Is it still effectively sharpening my knives? Should I replace the sharpener?
After pulling the knife through the sharpener, look at the knife's brink. If it is not shiny, it has not been sharpened. Replace it.

If it is shiny, head off it alone.

A few tips to work out if the sharpener is still in good mark.

Its always a good model to clean the knife sharpener. I only wipe mine down with a dry cloth. This is to remove any metal shavings that might affect the sharpeners performance.

A Handy Hint: Colour the bevelled edges near felt pen before sharpening to illustrate even sharpening and to notify if sharpening is even accrue.

For general kitchen knifes I prefer to use any a Sharpening Stone, Sharpening rod (AKA Sharpening Steal) or a
"SWISS istor SHARPENER"

Sharpening stones (for use on straight knifes) can be bought from your local hardware store prices ranging from $5-100.

Sharpening Rods (use for straight or curved blades) range from in the region of $10-200..

SWISS istor SHARPENER (for use on straight or curved blades) range from about $20-80. these can be found at Bunnings.

Like other you get what you pay for. I similar to to go for the better brands because they usually come with a Guarantee, and I dont want to ruin any of my knife by using a cheap sharpener.

Specifically I like the SWISS istor SHARPENER because its a well specified brand, I can use it on straight and curved blades and I know it is good quality and it wont wreak my axe.
