The issue I own with my AC right now is that it will not turn stale by itself.
Will it help me with this issue?
Its pretty old and the way it is controlled is by sliding the heat to the level you "think" is appropriate.

I have mine set contained by winter to keep different zones at a comfort smooth when they are occupied, and much lower when they are not. This saved me like mad of fuel this past year. Digital t-stats give you the ability to set accurate times for your a/c to turn on /off. and will be accurate in half of a degree vs your current one specifically 1-3 degrees off. brand sure that you label the wiring as you remove it from the old-fashioned one, Hopefully it is color coded
red- hot 24volts
green- blower/fan
white- heat
yellow- cooling
But since you mentioned it is a trane they use numbers so refer to color code . these are industry standards
