I've just bought a house, and on the side wall, its a bit black along the bottom half, and smells musty. also on matching wall upstairs in the top corners its black, and smells worse than downstairs. I've get someone coming out to look at it, but i dont wanna get ripped sour and told i need a wet through course when i don't. any advice??
Also, on the downstairs wall i've notice a few funny little beetle things (not shiny ones). is this a result of damp???
Did you own a survey on your house? If you did it would show if you have rising humid or need a watery proof course. It could be there's a tile loose on the roof hence the damp upstairs, a blocked nouns brick could be the cause downstairs, check that they're not self covered by earth or concrete. Ask for 3 quotes. Sorry can't support with the beetle.
best to procure more than one or two builders out to look at it.
maybe the pest controller from the council can dispense you advice on the funny little beetle things
Answers: Was the house plain with window closed, for any length of time? condensation may have built up and it may sort itself presently you're living in it and heat it. If that's not the case after areas around the roof, guttering, flashing's, pointing, in the locality of the upstairs damp may have need of to be checked out. For any mould wash down next to a fungicide at least. Don't assume you will markedly need a sweaty course putting in/redoing. I have a 150 year matured cottage with extraordinarily little footing, no damp course, and no sodden problems. I also once bought a property that was ringing showery inside, condensation everywhere because it had be empty/unheated for a while, no problem once I was living within it. Sometimes damp walls can be overcome simply by using a rainproof render to a height of 1 metre instead of plaster on the offending wall. There are varying solutions to different problems, a guy who is experienced and know what he's at will recognise situations, ,... "honest Joe", I think, is his label, if you can find him :-) Ask around more locally for reliable honest opinions as and when you catch to know your way roughly speaking if you've moved to a new nouns, don't take the 1st assessment as gospel, get more. The beetle are likely woodlice, carry in anywhere they can, and they do similar to damp places, usually curl up and die surrounded by heated dry houses. ( crikey, got carried away here, wrote a flippin' book! lol )
