I have a brick fireplace that have been painted a really repulsive color by the previous owners. I'm not sure if I should persue the tedious job of re-painting all the bricks , or if here is something I can cover it with. A friend suggested cement board...???... Is this the simply product or is there another that would also work??
Repainting the fireplace is certainly rather confident. Make sure to use a high heat paint designed for it like Brick-Anew. Otherwise the steam will make the paint bubble and flake sour making it look like crap again. Good luck.

I've painted fireplaces before, it's no big traffic

Get a 3 or 4 inch roller and roll the puppy out, take your brush and paint where on earth the roller can't reach.

Forget the cement board, first past its sell-by date what on earth are you going to do beside it that is better than paint

Cement board is expensive and difficult to work next to.

Painting will be done and forgotten way formerly you even have the slightest conception of what to do with the cement board.

I simply noticed the answer above mine and it's true what he said, however if you are not really into fine art bricks why on earth would you progress through all the work of installing tile? It's going to be 100 times the work and much costlier
Answers:    Well cement board is for setting tile or stone, so if thats the casing, you could tile right over the existing bricks so long that they are flat. If not, they can be skim coated with some thinset to realize a nice setting surface.
