I'm talking more or less the plumbers putty that's supposed to be used to seal the sink ring to the sink on a debris disposal assembly. Thanks.
Answers: As the others have said, use singular plumbers putty. Even though some caulks are water proof, one of the reason you need plumber's putty is for the compactness.
When you press that sink ring down hard, and you really involve to, caulk will just leach out from under the ring since it is so tough in comparison to putty.
Be big with the putty and use alot of muscle to variety that ring nice and tight. Then it will stay for several years.
It depends for what.....if it is a watertite seal later use only plumbers putty! Caulk will soak.
