The extremely old clay liner (flue) runs straight through the middle of my home. I have a new steel flue and boater installed years ago since the old clay liner be cracker, but I want to tear out the behind the times chimney all together so I can redsign the stairwell and takeover some of the lost space. It is now "off-set", but do I own other options?
Answers: Yes, you can do it and DIY if you choose. Most counties hold a clause for a home owners repair permit. The flue have to have a positive rise to properly vent the gasses and wrap up up out doors. You will need double wall stove pipe where on earth the flue penetrates a wall, ceiling or roof. Check your local building code to determine any specific details such as dampers, vent caps and mice screens.
I muse you are in USA, so I don't know the local codes.
Flue gas are dangerous, and from your tone I suggest you might be better having a professional examine the installation, as a botched living could endanger your life.
