We just set up a 16 x 4 foot vinyl pool and after we had the entity half-way filled we read that the manufacturer advise taking it down for winter storage because the vinyl "may not withstand ice and freezing temperatures". I know we should have read the adjectives manual before innards the pool (kicking myself) but aren't there chemicals or covers that would make the pool past the worst for winter without taking the whole article down and storing it? We live in southwest VA, temps can reach below freezing for several days at a time for 3-4 months, and the pool have a metal pipe frame.
It's not a angelic idea if you want to use it over again, it will rip and could damage it for well brought-up
We always leave our pool up surrounded by the winter. I don't think you would ever be able to purloin it up and reinstall the old liner. I have put wood surrounded by pool for expansion of pool water, as pool freezes it will push wood out of water taking pressure bad of side walls. I am sure you could find products at pool supply for this but wood, worked for me. I once lived in Covington Virginia, and had 18' foot pool beside vinyl lining it always did ok during the winter.
Enjoy your pool i wouldnt, i tryed it and it be rotted and there were holes, if you hold squrriels or chipmunks then they will make holes contained by it. so get your lazy butt up and put it away!! :D
Answers: I would follow the manufacturers recommendations. Even next to chemicals and covers, it won't protect the vinyl. Even empty, the vinyl is at risk. What happens is when it freezes and consequently thaws, the vinyl can crack and wouldn't hold water. Sorry, the best entry to do is to take it down and store it over the winter, that is unless you want to buy a latest one every spring.
