Since steam rises it will always tend to be warmer upstairs contained by the summer. If you want to perform a poor man's method of air paired, open all of your registers far-reaching open. Start the air conditioner. After 15-20 minutes, appropriate a temperature reading of each room. In the colder rooms, close the damper down a bit. Wait another 15 minutes or so and repeat the process. You don't want to completely close any of the dampers, but you do want to force more nouns into the warmer spaces and hopefully equalize the temperature more throughout the house. Of course, when you run the furmace within the winter, you'll need to start the process over again so as not to overheat those rooms. (Maybe make a bit mark on the damper lever position for reference subsequent summer). Anyway, that's the basic method for equal airflow and hopefully temperature throughout.

If you think about it, it make little difference. You set them at the most comfortable temperature. And the result could be the lower one barely runs while the upper one runs adjectives the time, because heat rises.

If you have a forced nouns furnace and have the ability to run the enthusiast without heat later it won't matter either because you would be mixing the upper air.

Answers:    In a true split level (at most minuscule where I live) the lower portion is half underground. Like a crypt, that part of the house will remain cooler in the Summer.^
