I bought a quite expensive hurricane lantern a few years which has stopped working. i hold discovered this is down to the toroidal transformer shorting out.Can i take it out and use an electronic transformer of duplicate rating or will this not work?
_IF_ the toroid be wired to operate off 50-60 Hz, and you can provide a regular transformer that will deliver alike AC output (both voltage and current capacity), then it should work.
However, if that toroid is constituent of a switching power supply, then a conventional transformer will not work.
So the press remains, is there an assortment of electronic components wired around this toroid? If so, after you would need to get your hands on a new toroid, or if you own a lot of time on your hand, rewire the existing one. (measure and remove existing wire, note their arrangement and counting the turns as you go).
If the toroid is intended to work on 50-60 Hz, then you might enjoy some trouble getting a conventional transformer to fit inside the lamp, but I suppose you could clear it external and put it into it's own box, similar to a modular supply.

I would replace it near the same type. Torroidal Txers are somewhat different to standard Power txers.
Answers: toriodal only have a donut shape. there is no other difference.
