Hello, have a Trane Central AC/Heat Pump. When the system is stale at the thermostat, I can hear a hum and slight vibration from the outside component. I can hear it about 10-15 foot away from the unit. When I turn the power breaker sour, the hum/vibration goes away. Is this average? I wouldn't expect any sounds from a unit to be exact off. I in recent times hate to wages $79.00 to get it checked out individual to be told it is normal. Thank you for your minister to and time!
Answers: No this is not normal it should turn sour as soon as you hit the thermostat. It is most likely that you hold a wore out contactor on the unit. They in truth weld themselves closed so the unit will not turn bad unless you hit the breaker.
If you are not comfortable working around electricity you are better off hiring a tech to fix it. A contactor is a $50-80 division.
You may have a contactor or relay that remains energized when it should not be. The thermostat is not calling for the element to be on but the contactor or relay is not turning off so part of the pack of your system is trying to run continuously. Even if this is normal, which I don't have a sneaking suspicion that it is, $79.00 is really cheap insurance to find out what is or isn't wrong compared to an emergency service call at dark or the weekends or replacement of major components surrounded by the outside unit
