10 year outmoded carter fry pump?

compressor is locked up. two choices $1000. to replace compressor or $4600. to replace entire heat pump inside and out? what would be the best? are these quotes average?
honestly I would just change out the compressor. This will be the entire outside element. 10 years is fine on the evaporater. It seems like a carnival price not sure what tonage you have or what kind of grill pump or what area you are in but I would only just go with a unusual compressor i know some people say repair the compressor, but if the 4600.00 is for a better seer rating,at least two higher,i would replace the in one piece unit, that's only 3600.00 more dollars, contained by the long run you will make up the different in spirit saving.remember the unit is ten years feeble. good luck.
I will assume you have an adjectives electric home , otherwise you would have gas heating. My feelings is to go with the complete money out. The reason is that your unit is at lowest possible 10 yrs. old, which is about the expected lifetime. The efficacy of the new unit will more than wage for itself over the next 10 yrs vs. paying higher electric bills and more repair bills. If you own Natural gas in your home forget the heat pump and receive a Nat. gas furnace as it is more efficient. Good luck and God Bless. Everyone has great answers. I'm going to engineer it real simple.

Do you want to do this fix now, effectively putting out this fire for very soon, only to have something else possibly develop on this unit in the insensible of winter when you need your heat? Or would you a bit take this unit that have been exposed to the elements for the past decade and put it out to pasture surrounded by lieu of a more efficient unit when strength costs are at a record high?

I would only change the whole piece out.
Answers:    Another way to look at it.

If you solely replaced the compressor AND...

If you invested the difference of $3,600 and got 10% in stocks it would money that $1,000 in three years. After that you are money ahead. AT a 5% return, in speak a CD it would have to last 6 years until that time the whole works needed replacing and you would be ahead.

BUT if you put it on a credit card and it is costing you 20% it only have to last 18 months to be money ahead (unless you pay stale the credit card then you are back to the first scenario.

A third agency to look at it, if you are replacing a complete system at $4600 every 10 years it cost you $460 a year, purchase price. So if the new compressor only last a single year, you got $460 worth of use and are only out $540 and are almost even contained by two years.

So financially unless there are other reasons noted for replacement doing simply the compressor seems best.

Good Luck.
Those quotes are pretty accurate. Replacing the compressor should be fine. The unit is singular 10 years old. It's got some life span left in it. Good luck. the compressor
