A friend told me that certain ivy plants can interfere with brick or other surfaces that they grow into, onto or over. Is this true?
Unfortunately this is true. Over time the plant sends little tendril out to cling to items. These tendrils work their passageway into bricks. Now it does take comparatively a few years for the damage to show.

Yes, they can lay waste to brick walls and chimneys. And one day you will want to remove the vine, and removing it will probably remove some of the mortar.

Don't let vines and other plants grow on your house. They trap moisture, which can rationale all sorts of rot problems, and they tend to bring bugs and snakes into your house.
Answers:    If the mortar is in correct condition it shouldn't harm the bricks or mortar. If the mortar and bricks hold cracks in them the roots can grow into the cracks and take home them worse. It all depends on the condition of the bricks and mortar.
