Will an Italian Cypress grow surrounded by Charlotte, NC? If so, where would be the best place contained by the yard...
If so, where would be the best place contained by the yard to put it? How much river would it need? (We're within an exceptional drought now. We would probably plant it when that's over next to.)
Answers: Cupressus sempervirens is a plant that grows zones 7-9. Charlotte is located surrounded by zone 7, so it will probably do okay. If you are in the city, you might enjoy a warmer microclimate that would deed as a better growing condition for them. If you are out in the spread out with little protection from other buildings or plants and you might carry cooler winds that could injure the plant, in that valise its best to plant things out of prevailing winds which are usually west or north west. so planting them on the east side of the house would block cooler wind. Just make sure they would receive ample sunlight. BUT FIRST
Check with your local law to ensure planting them is not illegal. (some plants can be invasive or be problematic). Also hold on to in mind, this drought will not be "over with". It might be smaller number severe later but we depend on the hurricanes/storms to replenish our river sources and this year we did not receive what we needed. With the growth of the areas like Charlotte and Research Triangle, near is a LOT more water self used then can be replenished. Just preserve this in mind that the problem of the drought isnt something i.e. going to go away any time soon. Next year is projected to be even worse. Steph is severely right all the method around..... Italian cypress, however, do not like the occasional dip within our temperatures... when it get to 15 degrees, the trees may not survive if the cold is for longer than one or two night..... that's why they are not usually used around here.... Leyland cypress is more often used as it's hardier... but it's surrounded by trouble around here from disease right now, so the 'folks that know' are suggesting you use thuja instead... they're tough adjectives the way around....

green giant is a lovely tree.... but, a short time ago as with any other plant, it wants water to draw from started..... so now is a moment ago not a good time to start any tree unless you enjoy a water source to be exact not restricted......
