I've got two neighbors across the street from me and they enjoy both now scalped their front yard, of which are planted with bermuda grass. Why would you scalp the patio? Doesn't that just bring on root rot or other damages to the exposed turf? What are the benefits of scalping the grass since winter? We just purchased and moved into this house after living surrounded by our other house for 9 years which had St. Augustine and don't know a adjectives lot about Bermuda.
Answers: Great query! More than likely your neighbors own scalped their Bermuda lawns because they are planning to "over seed" the turf for the winter. Bermuda grass is a "warm" season grass, meaning that it will run dormant and turn brown when the temperature drops below 60 degree for any length of time. Your neighbors want to have a green pasture through the winter months until the Bermuda starts to grow again (when temps begin to rise contained by spring) so they scalp the lawn and over nut with a perennial rye grass nut.This is a "cool" season grass and will stay green through cooler winter temperatures. The rye grass will die past its sell-by date when the Bermuda begins to grow surrounded by the spring, thus keeping their yards green adjectives season long. Bermuda grass is one of only a few turf type grasses that can be "scalped" resembling this without cause any damage and it will other come back when the heat weather returns. Many golf course "greens" are planted in Bermuda grass because it can be mowed down to 1/8" to 3/8" soaring. Hope this answers your question.

The with the sole purpose draw back is that they will miss the winter pre-emergents.
If you see their yard, I bet they hold a professional mowing service and a professional LAWN service.
Not many mowing companies are licensed to apply fertilizer, weed control and chemicals.
If you are spanking new to the area, hire a LAWN service for fertilizer and weed control. In the long lug, you will save money and your relationship.
