We have just taken over an allotment, the gooseberry bushes (5 of them) be a bit neglected, covered in weeds. We de-weeded them and give them some liquid fertiliser, but they only manage to produce 5 gooseberies!
Where did I go wrong, and how can I ensure a bumper crop next yeat?
Answers: Try pruning the bushes, this let air circulate to reduce the likelihood of mildew, and gets rid of old wood. Prune surrounded by winter, around february. Cut off older branches contained by the centre ofthe bush and cut older branches down to in the order of 1" long. Leave the last years growth alone as this is what where the fruit sould tolerate, however longer or straggly shoots can be trimmed.
They will grow best in wet soil and surrounded by spome areas they should be protected from birds by netting.
Best of luck.
i raised gooseberries for years in the mid west of usa cant tilt them in fl so dont know where you live but within the mid west they dont need feterlizer but do need to be trimed and surrounded by full sun also you might try to start new plants they very essy to start
