I must say it is righteous to learn something trial everyday. Today I learned how to chit a potato and I cultured what it meant.
The above relation gives adjectives planting information for the UK. I would imagine equal rule would apply to the onions as well since they are a cold tolerant plant.

I chit mine within the greenhouse and I cover up an area outside next to bubble wrap to warm up the soil. It make a huge difference in harvest lovely early spuds. You can plant onion sets as soon as the soil surrounded by a suitable condition, i.e nicely prepared and not too raining.
