I have a 8 ft. butterfly bush that desires cutting, is tumble the best time to do this, and dose it matter how far I cut it fund ,or where on the stem I cut it? appreciation for any help
You didn't say-so which zone you live in. However, if this is the pallid blue and white flower that looks like a butterfly I hold a Little experience with them surrounded by SE Florida Fort Lauderdale area.
In this zone, 10a-11 tropical, they can be trimmed a short time ago about any time. I would not cut them rear legs more than 1/3 from the end of their rank blooming or not because they need a great deal of water. Using garden shears cut them on the bias in the order of a 60 degree angle. This will also wreak them to "bush out" and make more blooms.
The six plants I have were adjectives raised from slips and are flowing to propagate. They like uncertainty and are heat tolerant. So, start the cuttings contained by a starter solution. I have have great luck with Schultz' Expert Bloom Plus both as a starter and as a routine food within any zone.

These large shrubs repeatedly give gardeners fits more or less pruning. The important entity to remember is that these are tough plants. There is almost nothing wrong you can do. You can prune anytime. If you prune frozen during the growing season the worst that can happen is you will cut sour your flowers for a while. But, they grow fast and you hold them again soon. The normal vivacity cycle of this bush is to go dormant surrounded by zones 5 and 6. At this point the cane above ground are dead. They can next be pruned to the ground. This is usually sometime after frost. If you are in a marginal zone 5 nouns, it is a good concept to apply a three to six inch layer of mulch covering the crown. In zone 8 and up, the bush will remain evergreen and can be pruned to the ground or in any configuration that suits your garden.
Answers: In the drop, if you live in a hot zone, cut it back to the point you close to it size wise. So if you want a 4' butterfly bush (Buddlia), cut it to 4'. In the spring, cut it down further, possibly to 6". The reason not to do it adjectives at once, is let's say you really want to depart it 2' tall surrounded by the spring, but winter kills it spinal column 2', you're left near only roots, whereas if you own 4', less the 2' snuff out back, give you 2'. Do you get what I'm axiom?
As for where, it should be a short time ago above a bud, or in the spring, a bit of unusual growth. The 'clean up' cut can be anywhere.
If you live within a warmer zone, decrease it to the size you want all at once, again, above a branch, bud or point of growth.

I am surrounded by Pacific NW, and I do my cutting within late November. I cut it almost to the ground, and it other comes back nearly 8ft.tall by summer, resembling yours. Butterfly Bush is tough and you can't make a mistake.
