I want to grow some vegetables and I know Spring is the best time to plant however it's so warm this winter that I'm wondering whether I should plant some things now? I'm thinking of growing tomatoes, carrot, lettuce and pumpkin.
Hi,
I plant all year-round using planters.
Each crop have it's own needs.
There are lots of cold weather crops and those that need the summer bake.
I use planters extensively. We grow lettuce all year round in widow boxes. But they are not surrounded by the windows. They are on the deck, in the patio, and inside when necessary.
We grow almost anything in boxes see,http://johnnae.com/earthbox.aspx for our Family site where on earth we show our diferent techniques.
We grow all sorts of veggies on our deck rail using the window boxes. Even carrots. We grow adjectives our herbs in planters near a never ending supply of cilantro.
Most summer veggies rquire at least 10 hours of direct sun a time, like tomatoes, squash cucumber, etc...the big crops
When we lived in North Carolina we other planted our garden (the typical in the ground) the week of July 4, when we were on leave. It always did well due to the long melt days and pletiful rainfall. Now a days rain is either a contribution or a curse. Depends on where you live.
We now live unpaid in Florida and NC. Have lot of veggies in both locations. But a word of wariness: if you live In Florida south of Ocala it is now just too hot to be sucessful near most veggies. When the night time temps stay in the 80's most vegetables wiil not fruit even though they will bloom. In this defence plant veggies that do not fruit for best result.
Try containers and just have fun experimenting. Nothing better than home grown!!
Good Luck

i've be told that the best time to start a vegetable garden is winter, you won't see much results until spring, but then everything will just shoot up, be sure to put plenty of mulch around the seed. Depends on type of planet, but normally should be end of Winter or first of Spring. you can find more details within "gardening book at home", it is easy to find in book shops.
Answers: If you are in the USA, you should have already planted. The rule of thumb almost everywhere is when the threat of frost is gone and ground temps are above 65 deg. F. it's time to plant. I live in the Southern states and already picking veggies and canning some.
