When these animals dig long tunnels in attendance is usually a small mound at the entrance . Not nearly enough to article for all the earth/dirt displaced by all along thier tunnels/burrows . At times I have gone to the trouble of collapsing thier tunnels and I enjoy always have to get lots of extra dirt save for what is around the entrance .
Answers:    They actually do push the dirt aside and concerned of pack the tunnels. They can have a ton of burrows lower than the ground. If you have one you probably hold more. Good Luck getting rid of them.
Moles just push the dirt aside. They give the impression of being to "swim" through the dirt. That is why you seldom see them in really heavy clay soil. They also do most of their moving around massively hear the surface.

They are pretty strong little critters. One tunneled under our flagstone pathway and lift up the flagstones as it tunneled.
