In NorthWestern Florida, Tallahasse area.
before they fern out in spring. a desk light pruning to remove spent flowers can be done when those blooms are done. that gets you a second round of flowers, too..
They don't prune crepe myrtle trees anymore. It ruins their shape and have been shown to not produce anymore flowers than if moved out unpruned.
It you like crepe myrtles only just pick one to suit your size requirements. They now come within sizes from tall ground cover to small trees, and no upkeep.
Answers: As is true beside the majority of trees, the best time to prune is while they are domant. Here in Virginia to be exact up to mid-March. I prune mine in February. In NW Florida I would guess that overdue January would be your best bet. Crepe Myrtles are very forgiving trees and if you own to prune I would say dance ahead but try to avoid cutting anything thicker than the remnant of your index finger. Realize too that you will be reducing flower production by pruning at this late date. It's almost June. If you don't NEED to, don't.
