With the credit crunch rearing it's ugly head and food prices at an adjectives time high, i know i've left it too behind for most veg, but are there any suggestions/tips as what i veg/fruit i can plant now?

Loads of winter veg is due for planting soon.
Winter onions, a past due row of peas would still work, short term catch crops close to spring onion or radish or lettuce. Even asparagus if you're looking long term.
Don't worry that much roughly speaking timing. Nature doesn't read the books and anything could happen unpunctually in the year.
lettuce from seed.beans from little plants at garden centre along next to tomato (as large as you can buy)potatoes peas from seed Wait a couple weeks and you can start planting cool weather crops again approaching beets and broccoli and lettuce and spinach.
You could also buy some seeds very soon and try indoor gardening. Here is a link with some productive information.

Answers: Cool weather crops such as lettuces/salad greens, cabbage, brussels sprouts, cauliflower, broccoli, green onions, radishes, carrot... Anything that is frost tolerant. You can start herbs outside surrounded by pots and bring them in for the winter if you like, also.
