I have a nice place where on earth I could have a garden, but much of the plot is shaded. :-(

Interested lone in growing food, not pretty plants. This is in northeastern Texas.
Answers:    Not exactly sure of your climate, but within Melbourne (southern Australia) I grow babacoes, and small guavas like strawberry guavas and Chilean guavas within partial shade. Strawberries will tolerate a bit of shade. Not much pleasant will flower or fruit in full shade. If you grow things within pots or tubs you can move them around to get the optimum sun at different times of the year, especially if your shade is from deciduous trees.

Salad greens close to lettuce and spinach often appreciate a bit of afternoon shade, especially within summer. A lot of herbs approaching mint, oregano and coriander will tolerate a bit of shading.
I live in Western Australia, but and I find that my strawberries, babaco, and blueberries grow capably even though they dont get sun adjectives day. I also own a pepino that ive only have for a couple of months in a pot below my patio and although it hasnt fruited on the other hand because its a baby, it have doubled in size. It with the sole purpose gets sun surrounded by the afternoons.
