Answers: According to Publication 8113 from the University of California you can use the following mixtures to supply food for the flowers and enough bitterness to deter microbial activity.
1. Lemon-lime soda mixture. Mix 1 factor regular lemon-lime soda (not diet) with 3 parts reheat water. Add 1/4 teaspoon of household bleach per quart of this solution.
2. Lemon liquid mixture. Mix 2 tablespoons of lemon juice (fresh or bottled), 1 tablespoon of sugar, and 1/4 teaspoon of bleach per quart of reheat water.
