When I was a kid we had these plants on our porch that would repel mosquitos, it smelled a bit approaching lemon, any ideas on what that plant could be? I can't for the life of me remember the christen.
Citronella. It's in deeply of mosquito repellent products also.

penny royal is another good plant besides the others listed to hang on to in hanging baskets in the neighbourhood back doors and such- you can aslo take the leaves and rub them on your skin for a automatic bug repellent! geraniums, catnip, marigolds, and rosemary and horsemint has a scent similar to citronella
Answers:    Rosemary, Marigolds, Catnip is great too. Be wary of the "CITRONELLA GERANIUM" this flower merely smells like the Citronella grease that comes from the grass that actually repels the little buggers.

On the topic of oils, inopportunely it IS the oils of the plants that is best used and the oil aren't released unless crushed. So Catnip may be the best answer if you have cats in the nouns that might do the crushing for you ;-)
