I'm in Western NC and this have come up in my patio. It's fast growing and spreads confidently. I'd like to use it if I can, but I want to be sure of what it is first.

Answers: I agree next to him...it's privet that has be allowed to just grow rainy.... also agree that you'd be better off minus it... the birds like the seed, but then they stir poop them all over and spread this stinker..... plus, it sends up suckers that hold on to right on spreading... soon it's a thicket that even wildlife cannot get thru.... you may similar to it and choose to use it, but if you do, know that you'll need to prune it heavily to keep hold of the seeds down and that bees will love it when surrounded by bloom.... it's not pretty in spring, cuz the leaves sway on all winter, but afterwards look really ratty until the new ones appear contained by late spring.... if you close to the looks of the plant, go look at the other mode, the variegated privet.... it's much nicer to the environment and easier to keep contained.... also a tough plant that doesn't mind you pruning it to hold on to it in stripe.... doesn't sprout all over tho.....
i enjoy seen these--forgot the name---in NY society treat them like shrubs
